Series: Daughter of Smoke & Bone

Soooo this was going to be a post about series in general but instead ended up in gushing about just one series that I recently finished… Had I had more time and no other obligatory reading, I would have finished this series much faster than I did, that’s how much I loved it!

Warning: incomprehensive ‘review’ because.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone Dreams of Gods & Monsters Days of Blood & Starlight

I don’t even know where to start. This is the first series in a long time that I am head over heels in love with. It has everything I love. Angels and monsters. Great characters, awesome world building, plot twists and turns, best plot ever. Amazing writing.

I swear Laini Taylor is some magician with words. I loved her descriptions, of the worlds, of the characters, of the feelings. And there’s so much more than the book. I really enjoyed looking up photo’s of the places she described, and the fanart that readers made of the characters.

She transported me right to Prague (I visited Prague a few years ago and loved it, and now I want to go back asap).

But not just Prague. I have always wanted to go to Morocco but thanks to Taylor I think I will try to speed up my plans a little..! And that’s just the human world… her descriptions of Eretz are just as vivid.

(photos of Prague are mine, photos of Morocco sadly not mine)

And then the characters. She has managed to give each character, even the most minor appearances, depth. You can’t help but fall in love with the characters (or passionately hate some others, which means the characters are a job well done imho). Taylor even treated her readers with a little extra, Night of Cake & Puppets, aka part #1.5, a cute little novella dedicated to Zuzana and Mik.

Night of Cake & Puppets

I refuse to talk about the plot because you will just have to read the books.

So what am I to do with my life, now that I finished this? I am afraid to move on to the next series…

What’s the last series you absolutely loved? Have you read Daughter of Smoke & Bone and what did you think?

  1. Aw, yes, I’ve read this trilogy and I adored it. I actually did the Slovenian translation for the three, so I’ve got this deeply set relationship with them 🙂 I love Taylor’s writing, it’s so rich and vibrant. I felt like licking the pages half the time to taste the things she was talking about.
But it’s been a while since I fell in love with a series… Scott Lynch’s and Patrick Rothfuss’ books are wonderful, but they’ve been around for a while…

    • Oh that’s cool 😀 Her writing is so beautiful that it does same like a difficult (but worthwhile) job to translate.
Yes, same for me… but keeping my eyes open 🙂 On the other hand, reading series that are finished is kind of comfortable because at least you don’t have to wait (years) for the next book.
